Phantom Baby Kicks

Earlier today I was sitting at a stop light, listening to the radio and fixing my lip gloss. All of a sudden I felt something straight up MOVE in my belly. For a few seconds I panicked, trying to remember if I took my birth control, when my last period was, etc.  I knew there was no possible way I could be pregnant. You have to be, what? 4 months along to feel your baby kick?

But WHAT THE HECK was that?

Every so often I get that same feeling that makes me stop dead in my tracks and have a mini freak out session. I’ve had this discussion with some of my mom friends and they all seem to have experienced the Phantom Baby Kicks.

We know it’s just gas… but seriously? We ALL have gas that is so powerful it feels like a baby is kicking? Come on. Something else has to be going on here.

If not, that’s just plain gross/slightly badass.

  1. ahaha!!! omg, those phantom babies FREAK ME OUT!!
I KNOW it’s impossible to go that long without knowing I’m pregnant, in fact I KNOW i’m not pregnant -at all- but holy cow, for those seconds my heart jumps into my throat & I have a total freak out, I’ve even pressed down into my stomach trying to pin that “baby” down and get it to kick again b/c it seems THAT real to me.
LMAO! What is wrong with me?! US!?

    Go away phantom babies!

  2. This happened to me not too long ago I felt it and told my husband it was too weird!

  3. You’re not alone! And it’s crazy because I KNOW that I can’t get pregnant anymore. Still scares the bejesus out of me though!

  4. Glad I’m not the only one who experiences these!

  5. I get those all the time, I hate it, it makes me sad because I know there’s nothing actually there.

  6. This happened to me not too long ago! I found myself thinking how cute it was that my baby was kicking, until I realized that my baby is 7 months old. Then I panicked, did the calculations, and realized it wasn’t possible to be pregnant again. Then I wondered if it was possible to be going nuts!

Glad to know I’m not alone :)

  7. I had it too! I think it is because you become so much more aware of your body and what is going on in there when you are pregnant. You can’t just turn it off, you know?

  8. Ha! I have totally had that. I think pregnancy just makes everything permanantly squished in there, making the gas work extra hard to get through. :)

  9. I totally wrote a blog about this like last month. I still get them. But I know it’s not gas, it’s more like a muscle spasm or the muscle jumps…I don’t know…but if you google it like I did you’ll see you’re not alone, lots of women experience the phantom baby movements.

  10. I’ve obviously never felt a baby kick inside me, but I used to have gas bubbles that would feel just like that! I could actually trigger it when I inhaled deeply. I would have someone put their hand on my stomach and freak them right out.

It must be bizarre to experience phantom baby kicks after you’ve already had a bun in the oven! :)

  11. Yup, I still get those, too! And like Jennifer mentioned, it’s more like muscle spasms than gas bubbles…at least for me.

  12. I’ve had the exact same thing happen! It freaked me out, but I asked around and apparently it’s really common. Weird though – like a phantom limb or something.

  13. ughhhh, add me to the list of mamas that also occurs to. except I have had Mother Nature visit me since soooo sometimes I have to go run to the store for a test, lol

  14. HAHA!! I got 4 negative pregnancy tests and FORCED my doctor to do an ultrasound because I just didnt believe her (I DO NOT want to be pregnant, and was FREAKING out). Well, the ultrasound showed a perfectly normal uterus (without a baby). I felt like a real turd walking out of her office. Im glad to see Im not the only person who has dealt with this.

  15. This is so crazy! I have those from time to time too! And I know I can’t get pregnant because I’m a man, but it STILL freaks me out – that’s just how real it feels!

  16. I have a 20 month old and a 9 month old and was scared to death when I started feeling these Phantom Kicks… I went a bought a pregnancy test (3 pack) and checked once a week for 3 weeks… I continue to have the feeling every 1-2 weeks and bought 10 tests at the dollar store for whenever I start to feel paranoid. I think I am so scared because me and my husband seem to be too fertile. We had kid #1 because I missed 1 pill and was late on the 2nd. And baby #2 because we didn’t use a condom once. It freaks me out and I know it will continue to!

  17. I have been feeling these “phantom kicks” all day! The first time I panicked and tried to push on my belly to see if it was a baby or not. My husband is fixed so he raised quite an eyebrow when I told him about it lol! Let’s just hope they really are “phantom!”

  18. I been getting these for he last 2 weeks, all day long, mostly a night, don know whats going on, i took a pg test in Blood Nov and it was neg, i took one i got from the store 2 days ago and it was neg, this is very bothersome to me, and more for my hubby because he is fixed, i dont think i’am pg, but i have a dr appt monday with the ob/gyn. Don’t like the feeling, my youngest is 8 yrs old.

  19. I found this…my dr. confirmed it after calling about it. I’m having them too!

When a womans body goes through pregnancy and delivery things change and sometimes get damaged. For me 4 c sections left a numb area on my stomach which wasnt an issue unless I caught it in the kitchen cupboard and didnt realise lol I spoke to my Dr re this and other things like phantom kicks and he explained it like this, the nerves can sometimes get damaged and it takes time for them to heal, ok so the numbness disappeared but the phantom kicks remain now my last baby will be turning 21 this year so a few years back I queried it with my gp, he agreed with my obgyn that it was natural nerve damage but in my case the nerves were mostly damaged in such a way they they couldnt repair properly hence the kick sensation. Over the years I have gotten used to it and now on the rare occasion it happen I remember fondly what it was like to be pregnant and the special time it was for me as a woman. However this is my experience and I am happy with the explanations and reassurance I have been given if you are not or you are concerned in any way a quick visit to the Dr will alleviate your concerns. Best wishes.

  20. so glad i found this. I had a scare recently when i missed my 2nd period. My contraceptive pill can stop periods but I’d always had 1 every 8 weeks for the past 3 years I’ve been no it. That test was negative and would have been around 7 weeks so was relieved as i don’t want any more kids. Last few days I’ve had a kicking sensation on the left of my abdomen. I’ve got 2 kids already and youngest is 8 so know the feeling well. I’d convinced myself the 1st test was wrong and i must be 11-14 weeks pregnant now. Then came the concerns that I’d been taking my pill the whole time. Luckily the kicking feeling started the day before i was due to see the doctor for a prescription for my pill. I discussed this feeling with him and he did a test. All clear. He also felt my abdomen and said he could hardly feel my uterus it’s so far down which clearly indicates there’s nothing living in there. This was relief as i was 16 weeks already with my 1st before could even get a test to show positive yet with my daughter the test showed pregnant the second i wee’d on it. Lol doctor said if it continues or gets painful to go back. But just put it down to bowels/gas and digestion. Felt it loads today and reminds me of when i was carrying my 2 but pleased there’s not another in there.

  21. I BEEN FEELING THE SAME THING I HAD UNPROTECTED SEX 4 THE 1ST TIME EVER LAST JULY I HAD ALL THE SYMPTOMS LEG CRAMPS NAUSEA FATIGUE HEADACHES BACK PAIN ETC. I GOT A BLOOD TEST DONE AND IT WAS NEGATIVE, AFTER THAT I GAVE UP NOW HERE I AM ABOUT 5 MONTHS LATER WAKING UP TO SOME KICKING LIKE FEELING. I HAVE NEVER BEEN PREGNANT EVER!!!! I’M ABOUT TO BE 25 ND IDK WHAT TO THINK CAUSE DR’S ARE O SET IN THEIR WAYS THAT THEY IGNORE OUR CRIES FOR HELP! I WISH I COULD GET AN ULTRSOUND DONE TO PUT ME AT EASE BTW MY STOMACH DID GROW.. HEEEEEELP! LOL

  22. OMG!!! OK I’m A LITTLE MORE RELAX AFTER READING UR GUYS COMMENTS…. I’ve HAD 2 TODAY AND I’m TOTALLY FREAKING OUT!.! I HAVE A 8 MONTH OLD!!! I THOUGHT IT WAS ONLY FOR THE 1ST FEW WEEKS AFTER I HAD MY BABY SO TODAY REALLY SCARED ME TO THE POINT I CRIED!!! I KNOW ITS NOT A GOOD THING BUT I’m GLAD I’m NOT THE ONLY ONE!!! :-)

  23. Been having these all week. Freaking me out since Its been 6 years whe chose to be awake and watch my doc cut, burn and tie my tubes after having twins and then a 10.5 pounder. I needed the peice of mind that I was done making babies and could enjoy them growing up. Getting a test if this continues!

  24. Having these phantom kicks also. This is the 2nd time I felt this. The 1st time I felt it, I was a week or two pregnant with my 6yr old, before I even knew I was prego. So I don’t think it’s nerve damage from pregnancy, since I was freshly prego with my 1st baby. Both times I felt the phantom kicks, I pressed down in the area an It felt like an actual little foot kicking it! This time around i had My husband press, an he also said it feels like a hard little foot kicking his hand from the inside of my tummy lol but if I was prego it couldn’t b a kick, but rather a muscle spasm maybe. But I’m wondering if the “spasm” is pregnancy related or what! I also have had gas that felt like little kicks but they never had power like these!

  25. Lol this is a joke I was so freaked out cz I knw that feeling I was thinking can’t be! I go 4 injection every 3rd month on the right time and my baby is jst 1yrs old! Lol nw I knw whts the prob although I did not had a pregtest yet bt I am damn sure I am not preg nw I feel a bit reliefed I think its gas cz I love gas tym to quiet lol!

  26. My theory on this is that after having a child or two, things are sufficiently rearranged in our bodies, and so the gas/intestines have more room to play!!

Because it seriously an odd phenomenon!

  27. Oh thank goodness. I was af
raid I was going to be on the show “I didn’t know I was pregnant”! I’m not alone!
