Confessions of a Makeup Addict – Part 2

You can catch more creepy details of my makeup obsession by reading Part 1.

Right. So my makeup routine didn’t seem all that complicated to me until I actually dumped out everything I use on a regular basis and tried to make some sort of sense out of it in order to take a photo and explain to you all what I actually go through each morning. After basically sitting and staring at the pile of stuff for a full ten minutes, my conclusion was this: I put a crap-ton of crap on my face.

Well, okay, let me take that back. I do use several products, but I try my best not to overdo it to the point where  I resemble A) a clown, B) myself from my secretive Spice Girl bedroom makeup sessions of yesteryear or C) any cast member of Jerseylicious. (No, I did not just make that word up and yes, you absolutely should watch the show. It’s a mess and I love it.)

She knows the true meaning of subtle.

I don’t know who is truly interested in hearing about The Crap I Put on My Face, but since I happen to love reading about what everyone’s favorite brands and products are, I took a picture for you…

I will now dissect said photo into extreme and quite annoying detail… for your convenience, of course. Keep in mind I don’t use every single one of these all at once, but tend to alternate them according to how skanked-up I prefer to look that day.

Just kidding. Enjoy. (Prices are approximate)

  1. Smashbox Photo Finish Light Primer – $16: When I first heard of skin primers, I thought it was the biggest waste of time and money EVER. Why add an extra step to your makeup routine in the morning when you’re already so busy? Then I was given a sample of this Smashbox primer at Sephora and was completely converted. It’s really quick and easy to apply and you don’t have to be precise with a brush or anything like that, but it makes your foundation stay-freaking-put. It’s probably my favorite thing in the photo.
  2. Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse – $8: I always try out different foundations, but just keep coming back to this one. It goes on smooth and covers really well. Two chubby pregnant thumbs up.
  3. Sonia Kashuk Bronzer – $10: This brand is actually pretty inexpensive and you can find it at Target. I don’t wear bronzer very often and am honestly trying my best to embrace my God-given whiteness. However, when I do feel too pale in the face and just can’t take it any more, this helps a ton.
  4. Benefit Cosmetics Boi-ing Concealer – $18: Ashley from Our Little Apartment turned me on to this stuff a few weeks ago. THANK YOU, ASHLEYYYY! I have major dark circle issues under my eyes and this stuff works like magic and feels like buttah.
  5. Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Double Face Perfector – $7: The name is a mouthful, but it’s basically just a 2 in 1 concealer for blemishes and a highlight. On my particularly haggard days (meaning, every day since June), a little bit of the highlight strategically placed makes my skin look so much brighter. Not sparkly, just brighter.
  6. NARS Blush in Super Orgasm – $26: Their plain old “Orgasm” is a great shade too. Obviously.
  7. Make Up For Ever Aqua Cream in Peach – $22: Cream blushes are really natural and look more dewy than powder does. I don’t use this every single day (more so in the summer), but the color is great.
  8. Sephora Matifying Foundation – $20: Again, I don’t use this every day or with all the other skin products I’ve mentioned so far, but when I’m in a hurry, this stuff is perfect. It has great coverage and comes with a sponge, so it applies like a compact powder.
  9. Maybelline Colossal Volum’ Express Mascara – $5: My eyes water like no one’s business, so waterproof it is. This mascara doesn’t clump up on me at all. I like.
  10. (Three of my favorite lip products right now) Maybelline Color Sensational Pearl Lipstick in Pearly Pink – $5, MAC Lipgelee in Bubble Lounge – $14.50, & MAC Lipglass in Nymphette – $14.50. Sometimes I wear them alone and other times I layer two of them at once. Love love love.
  11. MAC Eyeshadows in Mystery, Woodwinked, Club, Gleam, Shale & Sable – $14.50 each. It was hard to choose my favorites because all MAC eyeshadows are amazing. They stay in place all day and are really pigmented. Just talking about them makes me want to go back to the mall and get another one or five. I have issues.
  12. MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack – $15: I know this sounds stupidly dramatic, but gel eyeliner has changed my life. I used to use a pencil, but it would melt off in a few hours and I’d end up reapplying over and over again throughout the day. Not a fan of the maintenance. With gels, you apply it with a small angled brush (I use this one from Sephora) and it seriously is not as much work as it sounds. Okay, maybe at first while you get the hang of using the brush, but it is totally worth it because IT STAYS.

Okay, DONE. Now have you tried any of these and loved them as well? Hated any? What are your go-to products? If you happen to do a post on your own blog about your makeup routine, please feel free to link to it in the comments. I’d love to know that I’m not the only one with a ridiculous makeup obsession.

  1. gurrrrl…it's wha ti swear by. i dip the tip of the brush in the liner and just draw the line with the very tip. it's a super hard/not flexible brush, so it gives a waaaaaay better line. trust. it may be worth the investment. tell the hubz i said so. that should sway him.

  2. i used to have really bad skin so bare minerals is all i use cause its not oily and its so light i cant feel it and i use baby lotion as a moisturizer mostly because it hydrates and it doesnt make me break out but i would like reccomendations on lip sticks and gloses that yall like

  3. I've used Maybelline Colossal Volum' Express Mascara, I was soo excited when I saw u used it too! But now its more like a comb since I wore it so much that its completely dry but I really like the brush so I use AVON SuperSHOCK Mascara and use the Colossal Volume brush to separate my lashes. I have a few combs but they don't separate and de-clump-ify as good as that brush when im done with the AVON one I'm def switching back (it *is* weird talking about make up in such annoying extreme detail!) I think I will do post on my blog about my make up routine..not that its at all relevant to my blog but i have posted since last October (yes, as in 2009) so this will be a good kick off, I'm going to steer more towards crafty things and life moments rather then just a journal for my morning devotions. If you would like to read it the link is: http://life-by-grace.blogspot.com/ There will be more..soon..eventually.. :)

  4. Since I've seen so many comments about dark circles, ill spill my secret. I want to adopt this girl at Sephora and buy her presents every day for introducing me to this product…Korres Primrose Eye Cream. It definitely took a while (like 12-16) weeks to see the results, but it faded my dark circles to be almost non-existent, no joke!!! Its Ah-maze-ing!!!!!! And its all natural! The tube has lasted me since summer and I use it twice a day:) I don't even use concealer anymore! I also love the Evian face spray, it sets your makeup and gives you a dewey complexion!

  5. Oh lord, that picture is hideous!!! Well, you already know my favorites…doh. So I guess I have nothing to share! Oh except, your eyeliner thing reminded me of the one I have, except mine is a pencil…yet it’s just like the gel stuff in the pots, like you use. But as a pencil! You should check it out.

  6. Bare minerals well rested is my new love! It's a light powder you apply under your eyes (I also go slightly inside in the corners) and it makes me happy! Say goodbye to dark circles and people telling you that you look tired!

  7. Love this! Thanks for sharing. One question though…I have the same problem you do with mascara and eyeliner. My eyes water and plus the darn stuff either just disappears or end up below my lower lashes (intensifying those dark circles that i just tried to cover up, lol). I love using waterproof mascaras, but they are such a pain in the butt to take off. What do you use to get you mascaras off?

  8. Agreed, Mabel. AGREED.Sarah, it really is the best! Which brush do you use to apply it? I lost my MAC 263 and replaced it with that Sephora one. It's close, but just not the same!Traci, take a picture! :)Tricia, I'll definitely have to check out Well Rested! Dark circles are the WORST.Okay and I have one more thing to add that I bought Wednesday night… Fix Plus by MAC. It's a finishing spray and smells like lavender. I wore it for the first time yesterday and didn't need to touch up anything for hours and hours. So great.

  12. Rachel, approx. 30lbs. And yes! Oh man, the other day I was going through some old boxes and I found a bunch of old school work and notes. When I get off work I'll send you what you wrote me in one. Something about a 7 foot armenian and Fate falling off a chair at SORCE. hilarious.

  13. Mommy loves all things MAC – especially the eyeshadows. They also have a powder foundation compact, which she applies a thin layer of (with a big fluffy brush that I love) to set everything… She also likes Tarte cheek stains – gel blush in really pretty colors that you can layer to be as sheer or clown-y as you want. AND, when she’s feeling really fancy, she throws on half sets of false eyelashes – you’d be surprised how easy they are once you get the hang of it and they really make your eyes pop! :)

  14. 15. You should be in sales because you just made me want to go out and buy all of these things. ESPECIALLY the gel eyeliner because my life would be incomplete and worthless without my black eyeliner.

  16. If you are having trouble with undereye circles, try Benefit’s erase paste. It has done a wonderful job with the black eyes I have since having my son.

I love Clinique’s creamshapers. They go on so smooth yet do not budge. I use MAC’s smudge brush and smudge with a little matching eye shadow and it stays put until I take it off at the end of the day.

  17. Have you ever tried cake liner? I use Studio Gear’s cake liner. It comes in a pod and looks like eye shadow but you apply it with a small angled brush too and I LOVE it!

Thanks for the heads up in the face primer. I’ve heard good things about smashbox so I think i’ll give that a try! Plus, Ulta Cosmetics carries all their stuff and always has coupons!

  18. I am currently on the search for new make-up and am heading to MAC shortly so this post was perfect timing :) I will definitely be looking for some of those items. Thanks for sharing!

  19. Morgan!! You are so fabulous! Ahh, for those of us who have taken to hiding under rocks, we thank you. Standing at the makeup counter in Macy’s makes my head spin – I could never in one million years figure out which products are best. (even though I LOVE makeup) And if I did, I’d probably spend a million dollars doing so.
So this is like the condensed version of the A-B-C guide to having fun! <3 THANK YOU for sharing!

  20. I’ve been looking for a new concealer for my horrid post-baby under eye circles. Seriously they’re insane. Might try the one you posted (Boing or whatever, I’m too lazy to scroll up right now but I opened it in a new window – hah).

I also love MAKE UP FOREVER’s Aqua Eyes. For a pencil liner, it seriously stays put (my eyes water horribly too). It’s been the only pencil eyeliner I can wear, actually, and they have lots of fun colors! Worth the $$$

  21. lady – we’ve got SUPER similar taste in makeup! i am a former department store makeup addict and in the last few years i’ve become obsessed with finding cheaper brands that offer me a similar result to my old faves. i’ve found that the benefit eyebrow kit cannot be replaced, nor can mac eyeshadow (these are facts, proven by science.) but sonia kashuk concealer is seriously at least as good as any department store brand i ever tried, maybe even better! i go through a $10 tube roughly every 8 weeks because i often use it as a foundation by applying it on my face right after moisturizing and blending it around. i also really love physicians formula bronzer ($10 @ target) because you can use a brush to grab makeup from either the top or bottom of the kit for a darker or lighter result, so it’s really like 2 products in one! my other surprising and CHEAP favorite go-to-product is covergirl wetslicks lip gloss. the stuff is amazing – it’s made with real mint oil so it goes on cool & shiny & refreshing with no goop. it doesn’t have a ton of staying power but i love the taste so much i never mind re-applying it every couple of hours! it’s like $6 a pop and i usually have at least 3 tubes in different shades floating around. great stuff!

i really liked this post, mama! it’s not always fun to read people’s descriptions of their makeup (because i mean, RIGHT?!) but this had me giggling several times. you are so precious! happy makeup-ing, doll!

    xoxo!

  22. The Colossal! Me too! I effing love that mascara. It’s the best I’ve tried in years, and that includes fancy stuff like Lancome.

  23. Woodwinked is actually one of my favorite mac shadows along with shroom :) I’ve been wearing sephora blushes a lot lately, can’t beat it for the price. I usually wear lancome’s tinted moisturizer everyday because I only like light foundations and it’s super creamy and easy to apply!

  24. Oh, Olivia. I love her, but I don’t understand how she has a job as a makeup artist. ..or her taste in clothes for that matter.

but I love love love MAC fluidlines. ..and this post in general.

  25. I’ve been wanting to change up my makeup lately especially after feeling like such a scrub while watching those youtube tutorials. So thanks my dear! I may be copying you on some of these

  26. Jerseylicious ha ha!! I only watch it for Olivia and she cracks me up. SO funny. Have you seen the clip (hulu, youtube, something) where she talks about tanning??
My husband can’t stand the show (hates it with a passion) but it’s my occasional guilty pleasure :)

  27. Hello, my name is Patti. I’m a makeupholic. Seriously, you’re the daughter I never had! I adore makeup…always have, always will. I am so gonna get some of that Sephora primer…c’mon Tuesday!

I’m a counselor at an Emergency Crisis Center and we never tire of seeing the babies. And love seeing the little almond joys floating around…so beautiful!

  28. I finally just gave up on make up altogether a few months back. As much as I would like to improve my ugly mug, everything I’ve tried just rips my skin to bits. (I have ludicrously sensitive skin.) So these days I just stick to my honey cinnamon mask and an oatmeal moisturizing lotion I got from Avon.

The mask does pretty well controlling acne and cleaning without drying, and if you’re super careful applying it under eye, it works fairly well on dark circles since the cinnamon improves circulation. (Ground cinnamon burns like mad if you get it in your eyes though, let me tell you!)

  29. ‘two chubby pregnant thumbs up’ roflcopters
I need to try MAC. I never have. I think once I do I will get banned from shopping at the mall with the MAC counter EVER. AGAIN. By my husband, not the people there. THEY will love me.
I keep telling myself I am gonna go through my makeup crap and do some culling. I gave my sister two lipglosses that I didn’t wear last week. We all have to start somewhere.
I wear tons of crap on my face too, now that I wear contacts. The glasses hid the fact that I look like I was punched in the face. Nope, just have a baby.

  30. I just added 3 things to my wishpot thanks to this post, I can’t wait to have some spending money so i can try them out!
I have to admit tho that the idea of the gel liner SCARES ME. I have a feeling I would be super fug if I tried it but I’m liking Alyssa’s idea of the gel liner in pen form? Imma have to check that out!
p.s. “2 chubby pregnant thumbs up” made me laugh so hard I had to cross my legs. You are a riot!

  31. I love makeup.
I want to try Benefit BOING, I am afraid that it might not be enough coverage, eee!!!
    xo
    KATY

  32. Maybelline also has a fantastic (and inexpensive) gel eyeliner called EyeGel Pro from their EyeStudio line. I use blackest black. It’s a life-saver!

    <3

  33. So I may be totally late on commenting on this post (Oh, HELLO, July!) but I just wanted to share my great primer find! I used to swear by Smashbox Photo Finish Primer until a blog (sorry, can’t find the link!) told me to give my debit card a rest and try using Monistat Chafing Refief Powder-Gel as a primer instead. Ok, so it’s a little weird putting a Monistat product on my face (maybe a lot weird) but it’s $5.99 at my local Target (near the other Monistat stuff – usually down the tampon/pad aisle) and I used a $2 off coupon. Face primer for $4 – a whole 1.5 oz of primer for $4! It. Works. Amazingly!!! To me, it feels better than the Smashbox stuff. Try it – totally inexpensive and totally phenomenal!

  34. Have you ever tried Mary Kay’s foundation primer? It’s also $16, but you get 1oz instead of 0.5oz, and my makeup artist friend switched from MAC after having used Photofinish for almost a decade! It’s here, if you want to compare the benefits: http://www.marykay.com/kyredhead/color/foundations/foundationprimer/10039851/default.aspx

In fact, after reading your beauty posts (and <3 ing that our crafty selves would probably get along swimmingly), I'd really like your "every Jane" opinion of what the modern Mary Kay has to offer. :) What do you think? Swag bag?

  35. Hey, re makeup, do you have any ideas on how to create the cateye look with makeup? I have tried a few times but been totally unsuccessful unfortunately. Thanks!
