Accessorize, much?

Oh, hi Mary Kate. Quick question… How do you manage to walk upright and not spill your coffee while carrying three times your body weight in accessories?

Okay. I am a jewelry and accessory maniac, but 10+ all at once? Ouch, my eyes.

It’s always been my personal preference to look effortlessly stylish and less gypsy-esque. Over the years, I’ve been acquainted with many ‘rules of thumb’ when it comes to accessorizing. As silly as some of these sound, they really do work!

  • I once heard a woman say that before you leave your house, stand in front of a mirror and do a little twirl. Whatever catches your eye in the mirror as your spinning (I warned you, didn’t I?) is making too much of a statement and you should take it off.
  • No matter where you’re headed, as you’re walking out the door remove one unnecessary item.
  • Accessories should never exceed the amount of seven. This includes glasses, bold nail polish, a wedding ring, and earrings count as two.

So there you have it. Simple, silly, and obvious tips to avoid looking like a gypsy. But hey, if head scarves and tambourines are your thing, by all means, work it.

For the Jewelry-Obsessed

I will be the first to admit I have a little obsession with jewelry… and by little, I mean monstrous. One trip to the mall will mean at least two long necklaces, a pair of dangling earrings, and the occasional huge statement ring. There’s nothing wrong with that, right? Wrong. My ever-growing collection has taken up residence in various drawers, bowls, and plastic baggies in a tangled, jumbled mess. Just this morning I reached in one of the piles, aiming for my triple layered, 18″ gold chain necklace, only to pull out 23 others. Spending three hours untangling them was not on my agenda – such a nightmare.

I found these adorable, functional jewelry stands at Urban Outfitters. They keep your delicate pieces neatly separated, while being decorative and stylish. These are such great little things, and much more practical than a dusty old drawer.

Delight! I love the Little Birch stand, but I just don’t think it’d do the job for me. The Little Birch Forest, perhaps?

Forgiving, yet Stylish Options for the Lactose Intolerant

Those of you who bloat beyond recognition after eating anything with dairy — I feel your pain! Lactose intolerance is the devil. I can’t even look at fettucine alfredo without my stomach ballooning into oblivion.

Thankfully, after years of experience I have mastered the art of hiding the great bloated beast, while still remaining fabulously sassy and stylish… not to mention, humble. ;)

Fortunately, with all the great trends of the moment, you can wear a loose-fitting tops and dresses without the danger of being mistaken as pregnant. That happened to me once and ONLY ONCE, and you better believe I burned that yellow top without a second thought!

Keep these tips in mind next time you go shopping — they help me every day!

  • Big, baggy t-shirts defeat the purpose of aiming for cuteness. Stop right now and ask for forgiveness for allowing that thought to enter your pretty little head!
  • Stay away from anything too short. If the hem of your shirt hits you anywhere near the danger zone, you might as well just wear your bra, because you’re not hiding anything. (I’m kidding — please don’t!)
  • Be wary of ribbed sweaters, and any fabric that is too thin, stretchy, or clingy.
  • Just because it’s loose, doesn’t mean it’ll do the job! Garments should still fit your frame and body type without hanging awkwardly, pulling, or looking just down-right dumpy.
  • A well-fitted camisole worn under a flowing garment will give that extra support without adding bulk.
  • Empire waists are your holy savior. Stick with them, and no one will be able to tell you had that frappuccino with extra whip. Not that I’m condoning that sort of behavior.
  • Wrap dresses can be a lifesaver as well. Most items that are belted at the waist can give the illusion of a slimmer mid-section.
  • You know that girl friend of yours that tells the absolute, blunt truth when you really don’t want to hear it? When in doubt, ask her opinion. She will come in handy.

What are your figure-flattering tricks? I know I’ve only scratched the surface…

Playing Dress Up

We’ve all had those days where we’ve stood, staring blankly into our black hole-of-a-closet, searching desperately for something to wear but had no idea where to start. With the added pressure that comes from being late to work, having loads of errands to run, or my personal favorite – your handsome date is on his way to pick you up – a meltdown is inevitable.

I’ve found that by having a few neutral basics in your wardrobe you can save yourself some of the stress that goes into planning an outfit. Take the basic white t-shirt and jeans, for instance. Worn alone, you may look a bit blah… but by adding a few glamorous touches, you’ll step out of your house looking completely pulled together and fabulous.

Casual Friday

It’s Casual Friday at work, but you don’t want to look dumpy. What to do, what to do… Layer a graphic tank under your t-shirt and top it off with a cute jacket. A pop of color using great shoes, coordinating accessories, and a big fancy bag will have you looking amazing.

Running Errands

Now you have a ton of errands to run — now is not the time to break in those new heels. Cute and comfortable is the way to go! Adorable flats (oh, how I love animal print), minimal accessories, and a practical purse are essential for a day of walking and shopping.

Date Night

Finally, date night is here! Stress can cause bags under your eyes, which isn’t a good look, even for a beauty like you. Pull it together, love! An olive shrug and plum heels coordinate, without looking too matchy-matchy. Be a little fancy with gold and bronze accessories, including a clutch just big enough to hold your lipstick and keys (he’s paying, remember?).

A white tee and jeans doesn’t have to be boring. They can be used as a simple, effortless foundation and will save you so much hassle if you know what you’re doing. Try it out, my lovelies.
